Deerproof Garden

Expert Article By: Jena Luthovski

Life can be beautiful on farmland that stretches what may seem life for infinity. Acre after acre after acre and land separates you from the hustle and stress of the big city. However, you still have a problem that doesn?t normally exist in metropolis. Usually in the serenity and peaceful quiet that doesn?t normally exist in metropolis. Usually in the serenity and peaceful quiet of the farmland in the rural American heartland, lives resident deer. Whether it?s the buck, doe, yearlings or even fawns, once deer become accustomed to the garden of your home as they suck up its seeds, it?s nearly impossible to get rid of them without threatening them or other safer remedies.

The plant species that are most attractive to deer are hostas, phlox and day lilies. Those are only three among many. A decorative fence that surrounds the food garden is usually not high enough to keep the deer out. Fortunately, there are ways to rectify that shortcoming. Regular spraying with liquid fence is a good start, but there are other effective ways for deer proofing.

Gardens are very unique because they are generally our own antidote to civilization, like Club Med without the guests, service representative and costs. Women and men have the opportunity to cultivate new beauty and life as they find solitude with mother nature. The outside world slowly dissolves as we work the soil, compost, weed, till and toil until we fill our inner-selves with the aroma of God?s green earth. However, our covenant with the earth and green slowly becomes amiss. Plants are missing and getting damaged. The damage subsequently worsens before there?s total destruction to all the hard work that you put into your garden. The culprit is usually that historical mascot of rural living known as deer.

Usually with just survival and reproduction in mind, deer are neither malicious nor benevolent. They are only animals with an incessant appetite for tulips and yews among many plants that grow in your garden. Fortunately, there are many methods of keeping deer away from your good garden creations.

Although it?s difficult to pinpoint a sure-fire way to repel deer from your garden, there are a few tricks of the trade. Once you design a food garden to sidestep deer damage, important considerations like the overall appearance and purpose of your garden don?t change. However, you can still accomplish your goals in several ways.

Open Question: Watermelon garden, need help?

Ok, doing my 2nd watermelon garden this year (a little late, I know) and I need some tips. Here is some info I think you will need: In Central Texas Already sandy ground (underneath the grass) 3 decently long Rows (I think should suffice) Using Sugar Baby Seeds After tilling up the grass yesterday, I noticed that there is a lot of tilled up grass scattered throughout the garden. What is the easiest way to get it all out? I was kinda hoping there was something I could throw on the back of my lawn mower but if I need to use an old fashioned rake I will lol. I also need some tips on some cheap products to use on the garden. I know ants and grass (growing back) was a big problem last year. Fertilizer or not? How often do you water when Texas is relatively dry during the summer? Would appreciate all the help, thanks!

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?

Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got tired of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it hard? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might enjoy learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Open Question: Can I plant my garden near Holly Bushes?

I want to plant a few vegetable rows in our flower bed next to our house. We live on a military base and our housing office has planted a few holly bushes in the same flower bed. We cant remove them without replacing them later. I was going to try and plant a few things around them but they will still be close. Will it hurt the vegetable plants to have them so close to the holly? Ive got a good 3-4' x 10' space for a small garden. And I cant plant anything in the backyard because our dog will destroy everything very fast lol and anything outside of the flower bed gets completely destroyed by the lawn care company. I thought about doing a container garden but I dont think housing will allow it, theyre looking the other way to let me plant vegetables in their precious flower beds so that we can save money and grow our own stuff. Im not sure how they will feel about container gardening out front. The other side of our house is shaded majority of the day since we have a 2 story but the holly bush side is full sun until 4 or 5 in the evening. Im going to cut back the Holly and the knockouts to let more sun get to the vegetables. Im going to do strawberries in baskets from our front porch and thinking of doing tomatoes this way also.

Open Question: Getting rid of iron stains on a drive?

I used some garden sand on my drive when it was icy. It includes iron containing chemicals to feed my lawn. It's left brown stains (probably Fe2O3) on my drive. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains? Would hydrochloric acid do it or would it dissolve my drive?
