DoItYourself Woodwork Projects

Expert Article By: John Mann

Creating your own woodwork projects is an enjoyable past time that takes some skill, patience and creativity. If you are new to woodworking, rest assured that with each completed project, your skill level increases. The key to improvement lies in choosing appropriate jobs that match your skill level. Even if you consider yourself a beginner, many fun and creative woodwork projects can be tackled.

Personalized Woodwork Projects

Perhaps the most satisfying thing about woodworking is being able to give a unique and personalized gift to someone you love. Whether for a birthday, anniversary or birth, a handmade gift is memorable. Personalized woodwork is also a great present idea for children who seem to have everything. Creating a piece for a child does not have to be a difficult task and there are many toys and accessories that will appeal to a child?s tastes. For instance, building a rocking horse or rocking cow is a surprisingly simple project that all children would surely enjoy. There are really only three parts to the construction, the rockers, the handles and the footrests. To ensure that your rocking horse is safe and comfortable, the handles should be high-mounted and the footrests equipped with a cross-brace.

A popular woodwork project that appeals to girls is the Victorian dollhouse. Almost every little girl dreams of having her own beautiful dollhouse that she can play with for countless hours. This is a simple woodwork project that allows you to be as creative as you like. You may find yourself getting carried away with all the little details and intricacies of this project. It is up to you to decide whether you want to create a lovely and simple dollhouse, or one that is detailed and elaborate; either way, this project is great fun to tackle.

A hope chest is a gift given to a child, and over time, it becomes an heirloom to be passed on. Hope chests are wonderful, meaningful gifts that are also very attractive decorative pieces. This woodwork project is easily handled because it can be modified to your individual skill level.

Backyard Projects

Perhaps you would like to try a woodwork project that your family can enjoy. Woodwork projects for the garden can be easy and will make your backyard area more attractive and comfortable. If you consider yourself a beginner, building a trellis is easy and simple. However, trellises can also be made to look more elaborate with the inclusion of detailed lattice work. And, you can complement your trellis with an easy-to-build planter. Constructing a privacy screen is also a nice addition. This project only requires that you build a standard wooden frame, then, it is up to you to incorporate the personalized details. Building a picnic table is not really any more difficult, but it does require more time. So, if you are looking to undertake a simple project and you have no time restrictions, a picnic table is a wonderful backyard furniture item.

Woodwork projects are not only fun, but they can also become an interesting hobby that allows you to build personalized pieces. Whether your goal is to pass on your woodwork as gifts to others, or whether you choose to personally enjoy the fruits of your labour, there is certainly a woodwork project to fulfill your wishes.

Open Question: Watermelon garden, need help?

Ok, doing my 2nd watermelon garden this year (a little late, I know) and I need some tips. Here is some info I think you will need: In Central Texas Already sandy ground (underneath the grass) 3 decently long Rows (I think should suffice) Using Sugar Baby Seeds After tilling up the grass yesterday, I noticed that there is a lot of tilled up grass scattered throughout the garden. What is the easiest way to get it all out? I was kinda hoping there was something I could throw on the back of my lawn mower but if I need to use an old fashioned rake I will lol. I also need some tips on some cheap products to use on the garden. I know ants and grass (growing back) was a big problem last year. Fertilizer or not? How often do you water when Texas is relatively dry during the summer? Would appreciate all the help, thanks!

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?

Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got tired of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it hard? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might enjoy learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Open Question: Can I plant my garden near Holly Bushes?

I want to plant a few vegetable rows in our flower bed next to our house. We live on a military base and our housing office has planted a few holly bushes in the same flower bed. We cant remove them without replacing them later. I was going to try and plant a few things around them but they will still be close. Will it hurt the vegetable plants to have them so close to the holly? Ive got a good 3-4' x 10' space for a small garden. And I cant plant anything in the backyard because our dog will destroy everything very fast lol and anything outside of the flower bed gets completely destroyed by the lawn care company. I thought about doing a container garden but I dont think housing will allow it, theyre looking the other way to let me plant vegetables in their precious flower beds so that we can save money and grow our own stuff. Im not sure how they will feel about container gardening out front. The other side of our house is shaded majority of the day since we have a 2 story but the holly bush side is full sun until 4 or 5 in the evening. Im going to cut back the Holly and the knockouts to let more sun get to the vegetables. Im going to do strawberries in baskets from our front porch and thinking of doing tomatoes this way also.

Open Question: Getting rid of iron stains on a drive?

I used some garden sand on my drive when it was icy. It includes iron containing chemicals to feed my lawn. It's left brown stains (probably Fe2O3) on my drive. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains? Would hydrochloric acid do it or would it dissolve my drive?
