5 Pieces of Equipment Gardeners Cant Live Without

Expert Article By: Colin Smith

Gardening is fun and rewarding and may be considered a hobby, talent or both and sometimes it?s just luck. Gardening is not as easy as it looks and involves dedication, time and consistency and many trials and errors. There are many aspects to maintaining a healthy garden, but some aspects are more important than others. An individual who likes to garden can have the knowledge to produce the best garden in the world, but without the right equipment and materials it just wouldn?t be possible.

Below you will find a list of the top 5 pieces of equipment which gardeners simply cannot live without:

1. Trowel ? A trowel is a shovel-like piece of equipment which is used to dig up dirt and set small plants. There are many styles to choose from and type of handle on your trowel will determine how well it works. Easy grip, non-slide and non-slip grips are the best form of handle to choose. These will be easier to use and will require less work than any other form of trowel. A trowel with no grip will be difficult to use and could end up ruining your garden. Try one out in your hand first to ensure it feels comfortable. There?s nothing like having your hand cramp or the trowel slip while using it to dig in a beautiful, new plant.

2. Pitchfork ? A pitchfork is a gardening tool which has 2-6 prongs and a long handle. The sizes of pitchforks vary, depending on what they are being used for. The space between each prong varies as well. Pitchforks are used to separate, lift and throw loose pieces of material such as dirt and leaves.

3. Spade ? A gardening spade has a long, thick handle and a heavy flat blade. This tool is used to dig up and move pieces of dirt from one place to another. It can also be used to pack down dirt once the flower has been planted.

4. Pruning Shears ? Pruning shears are tools which have a long handles and blades. This type of gardening equipment is used to allow gardeners to precisely prune rose bushes and other plants and unruly vines, etc. It can also be used to cut the grass at the edges of walkways and garden beds, in those hard to reach places. It is also used to trim the edges and remove dead leaves or wood on flowers. There is no other piece of gardening equipment which can do the same job as pruning shears. Without the use of this piece of equipment, your garden will end up looking messy and disorganized. Always, always, always invest in good quality pruning shears. Good ones have a lifetime guarantee and low-end ones will make shrapnel of your heritage rose.

5. Wheelbarrow ? A wheelbarrow is one of the larger pieces of garden equipment. It is a cart with a handle and at least one wheel which is designed for easy transportation of materials from one place to another. Purchasing a wheelbarrow will save you a lot of time and effort, especially if you are off to the compost heap, and will make for a pleasant gardening experience. Another option is the 4-wheeled gardening cart.

There are many pieces of gardening equipment which will make this hobby easier and more efficient, however the ones listed above are recognized as the most important. These pieces of equipment will likely last a very long time.

Open Question: Watermelon garden, need help?

Ok, doing my 2nd watermelon garden this year (a little late, I know) and I need some tips. Here is some info I think you will need: In Central Texas Already sandy ground (underneath the grass) 3 decently long Rows (I think should suffice) Using Sugar Baby Seeds After tilling up the grass yesterday, I noticed that there is a lot of tilled up grass scattered throughout the garden. What is the easiest way to get it all out? I was kinda hoping there was something I could throw on the back of my lawn mower but if I need to use an old fashioned rake I will lol. I also need some tips on some cheap products to use on the garden. I know ants and grass (growing back) was a big problem last year. Fertilizer or not? How often do you water when Texas is relatively dry during the summer? Would appreciate all the help, thanks!

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?

Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got tired of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it hard? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might enjoy learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Open Question: Can I plant my garden near Holly Bushes?

I want to plant a few vegetable rows in our flower bed next to our house. We live on a military base and our housing office has planted a few holly bushes in the same flower bed. We cant remove them without replacing them later. I was going to try and plant a few things around them but they will still be close. Will it hurt the vegetable plants to have them so close to the holly? Ive got a good 3-4' x 10' space for a small garden. And I cant plant anything in the backyard because our dog will destroy everything very fast lol and anything outside of the flower bed gets completely destroyed by the lawn care company. I thought about doing a container garden but I dont think housing will allow it, theyre looking the other way to let me plant vegetables in their precious flower beds so that we can save money and grow our own stuff. Im not sure how they will feel about container gardening out front. The other side of our house is shaded majority of the day since we have a 2 story but the holly bush side is full sun until 4 or 5 in the evening. Im going to cut back the Holly and the knockouts to let more sun get to the vegetables. Im going to do strawberries in baskets from our front porch and thinking of doing tomatoes this way also.

Open Question: Getting rid of iron stains on a drive?

I used some garden sand on my drive when it was icy. It includes iron containing chemicals to feed my lawn. It's left brown stains (probably Fe2O3) on my drive. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains? Would hydrochloric acid do it or would it dissolve my drive?
