How to Remove Thatch From a Lawn

Expert Article By: Kevin Whiteside

You know that brown patchy debris in a lawn that accumulates on top of the soil but below the grass line? That's thatch. Thatch consist of grass clippings, grass stems, roots, and other debris that either decomposes or accumulates on a lawn over time.

A few reasons thatch can occur are

1) A lawn has never been aerated

2) Cutting high grass frequently and leaving the clippings on a lawn.

Thatch is not always a bad thing as it can hold moisture to protect the lawn from extreme heat and lack of water.

Questions to be asked before removing thatch(dethatching)

1) Is there enough thatch on the lawn to justify dethatching?

2) If so, what process should I use to dethatch the lawn?

Lawn business owners and homeowners need to measure the amount of thatch in a lawn to determine if dethatching needs to be done. I prefer to take a pencil and stick it in the thatch until it touches the ground.Mark the pencil with your fingernail where the thatch comes up to.

After doing this a few times you will be able to eye it and know whether or not to dethatch. The first couple of times you can measure with a ruler.

As a guide, anything over 1/2 inch should be dethatched as this prevents adequete nutrients, air, and water from reaching the soil. Excessive thatch can also encourage pests and lawn diseases.

Dethatching can be done in 3 ways depending on the size of the lawn and the amount of thatch accumulated.

1) Aeration- For lawns that have less than an inch of thatch. This is done with an aerator. Always use an aerator that pulls plugs from the ground as opposed to the ones that poke holes.

2) Rake the lawn manually- using a leaf rake, garden rake, or thatching rake. Raking is fine for small to medium size lawns with thatch less than 1 inch. Raking does take some time, but less stressful on the lawn than a Power Rake.

3) Power Rake- Also called a Power Dethatcher. Use this when there is more than 1 inch of thatch on the lawn. Power Rakes are a stout piece of equipment that uses an engine like a lawn mower to drive vertical blades or tines to cut the surface of the soil. These blades or tines can be adjusted to certain depths.

You can rent either a power rake or an aerator from Home Depot or another equipment rental store in your area.

If you decide to dethatch using a power rake mow the lawn to about half of its regular mowing height.

The blades of the power rake should be adjusted to cut about 1/2 inch into the soil to remove thatch. Always go over the yard twice and change direction of your paths. For example, (long ways and short ways) or (diagonal one way and diagonal the other way).

After dethatching, rake up all the debris and thatch.

If you would like to fertilize or reseed the lawn, this is a good time as roots are exposed.

Water when you are finished dethatching.

Since some power dethatching can make a yard look bad, remember to dethatch when a lawn can recover the best such as right before the prime growing seasons. Different types of grasses have best and worst times to dethatch because the growing seasons vary.

Having a healthy lawn can can definitely improve the look of the landscape and the curb appeal.

Open Question: Watermelon garden, need help?

Ok, doing my 2nd watermelon garden this year (a little late, I know) and I need some tips. Here is some info I think you will need: In Central Texas Already sandy ground (underneath the grass) 3 decently long Rows (I think should suffice) Using Sugar Baby Seeds After tilling up the grass yesterday, I noticed that there is a lot of tilled up grass scattered throughout the garden. What is the easiest way to get it all out? I was kinda hoping there was something I could throw on the back of my lawn mower but if I need to use an old fashioned rake I will lol. I also need some tips on some cheap products to use on the garden. I know ants and grass (growing back) was a big problem last year. Fertilizer or not? How often do you water when Texas is relatively dry during the summer? Would appreciate all the help, thanks!

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?

Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got tired of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it hard? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might enjoy learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Open Question: Can I plant my garden near Holly Bushes?

I want to plant a few vegetable rows in our flower bed next to our house. We live on a military base and our housing office has planted a few holly bushes in the same flower bed. We cant remove them without replacing them later. I was going to try and plant a few things around them but they will still be close. Will it hurt the vegetable plants to have them so close to the holly? Ive got a good 3-4' x 10' space for a small garden. And I cant plant anything in the backyard because our dog will destroy everything very fast lol and anything outside of the flower bed gets completely destroyed by the lawn care company. I thought about doing a container garden but I dont think housing will allow it, theyre looking the other way to let me plant vegetables in their precious flower beds so that we can save money and grow our own stuff. Im not sure how they will feel about container gardening out front. The other side of our house is shaded majority of the day since we have a 2 story but the holly bush side is full sun until 4 or 5 in the evening. Im going to cut back the Holly and the knockouts to let more sun get to the vegetables. Im going to do strawberries in baskets from our front porch and thinking of doing tomatoes this way also.

Open Question: Getting rid of iron stains on a drive?

I used some garden sand on my drive when it was icy. It includes iron containing chemicals to feed my lawn. It's left brown stains (probably Fe2O3) on my drive. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains? Would hydrochloric acid do it or would it dissolve my drive?
