Indoor Ponds Keep Plants and Fish Healthy During Winter Months

Expert Article By: Rob Bernabe

If you?ve never seen an indoor fish pond or are of the mind that the only place for a fishpond is outdoors, it?s time to readjust your thinking. Many people love the idea of having a goldfish or Koi pond in their lawn and garden area but find the reality isn?t always as wonderful as the fantasy.

Every winter runs the risk of losing the plant and fish life in your pond with the first freeze. As a result, more and more people are coming up with a method for bringing the outdoors, in and forming your very own pond indoors is a beautiful alternative to a tired old aquarium. While an indoor pond doesn?t have to be beautiful in order to be functional, you can choose to make it a focal point and conversation piece quite easily.

A fairly simple and inexpensive way to craft an indoor pond this winter season is by using interlocking landscaping blocks to form a basic outline, and place a pre molded plastic pond liner (to avoid leaks), and other landscaping items such as rocks, plants, and soil in order to fill in the gaps. Others have even used a plastic kiddie pool for the fish and disguised the pool by hiding it with bricks or landscaping rocks.

The main purpose of indoor ponds is to protect your fish and plant life from the extreme winter weather conditions. It is quite easy to move the fish and plants from one pond to another. Be sure to keep the indoor pond regulated for temperature and water freshness by using proper equipment. Taking these precautions should keep your Koi fish and your plants healthy throughout the harsher winter months.

Open Question: Watermelon garden, need help?

Ok, doing my 2nd watermelon garden this year (a little late, I know) and I need some tips. Here is some info I think you will need: In Central Texas Already sandy ground (underneath the grass) 3 decently long Rows (I think should suffice) Using Sugar Baby Seeds After tilling up the grass yesterday, I noticed that there is a lot of tilled up grass scattered throughout the garden. What is the easiest way to get it all out? I was kinda hoping there was something I could throw on the back of my lawn mower but if I need to use an old fashioned rake I will lol. I also need some tips on some cheap products to use on the garden. I know ants and grass (growing back) was a big problem last year. Fertilizer or not? How often do you water when Texas is relatively dry during the summer? Would appreciate all the help, thanks!

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?

Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got tired of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it hard? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might enjoy learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Open Question: Can I plant my garden near Holly Bushes?

I want to plant a few vegetable rows in our flower bed next to our house. We live on a military base and our housing office has planted a few holly bushes in the same flower bed. We cant remove them without replacing them later. I was going to try and plant a few things around them but they will still be close. Will it hurt the vegetable plants to have them so close to the holly? Ive got a good 3-4' x 10' space for a small garden. And I cant plant anything in the backyard because our dog will destroy everything very fast lol and anything outside of the flower bed gets completely destroyed by the lawn care company. I thought about doing a container garden but I dont think housing will allow it, theyre looking the other way to let me plant vegetables in their precious flower beds so that we can save money and grow our own stuff. Im not sure how they will feel about container gardening out front. The other side of our house is shaded majority of the day since we have a 2 story but the holly bush side is full sun until 4 or 5 in the evening. Im going to cut back the Holly and the knockouts to let more sun get to the vegetables. Im going to do strawberries in baskets from our front porch and thinking of doing tomatoes this way also.

Open Question: Getting rid of iron stains on a drive?

I used some garden sand on my drive when it was icy. It includes iron containing chemicals to feed my lawn. It's left brown stains (probably Fe2O3) on my drive. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains? Would hydrochloric acid do it or would it dissolve my drive?
