Ten Steps To A Healthy Lawn

Expert Article By: News Canada

A simple, "preventative maintenance" lawn care plan will keep your lawn in top shape all year 'round

(NC)-Just follow these 10 easy steps to keep your lawn at its best:

1. Start with a good soil preparation. If you're starting a new lawn, you'll never regret the investment you make now in improving the soil. Grass grows best in a well-drained blend of topsoil, sand and organic matter several inches deep. Remove any hard packed snow patches and rake out old thatch to allow the grass to "breathe". Top up with a specially formulated soil for lawns such as Hillview Top Dresser or Green Earth Premium Compost.

2. Seed if necessary. As with fertilizer, buying quality grass seed pays off in a thicker lawn. Use a good quality mixture such as C-I-L? Golfgreen™ to patch bare spots, or spread overall late in fall or early spring. Rake lightly to ensure the seed contacts the soil, apply a starter fertilizer and water as necessary to keep the lawn from drying out.

3. Control crabgrass. (Mainly in Ontario) If crabgrass was a problem last year, apply a Crabgrass Preventer in early spring to control crabgrass as it starts to germinate.

4. Control broadleaf weeds. Weeds like dandelion, plantain, chickweed and others compete with grass for soil nutrients... and they usually win. If your lawn has a few weeds, spot-treat them with Lawn WeedOut. But if your lawn is over-run with weeds, then a "Weed & Feed" fertilizer is your best bet.

5. Water...but only if needed. Don't be afraid to let the top surface of the soil dry out...this will encourage deep-rooted, stress-tolerant grass.

6. Control insects. White grubs, chinch bugs, leather-jackets, ants, wireworms and many common insects could destroy your lawn if conditions favour them. Try this: Cut off both ends of a coffee tin, sink half way into the lawn, and fill with water. If several chinch bugs make their way to the surface, apply a lawn insect control product such as C-I-L? GrubOut.

7. Use the correct mower height. In dry summer weather, let the lawn grow out a bit, and then cut with the lawn mower set up higher. In the fall, cut shorter again to avoid giving turf diseases a place to develop in the foliage.

8. If you don't need to control weeds or insects, don't. Application of a regular lawn fertilizer like Golden Vigoro 24-4-8 every 10 to 12 weeks may be all you need to keep your lawn healthy.

9. Rake leaves so the grass can breathe. Chopped up, they make a great mulch for gardens.

10. Don't forget to feed in the fall. It's one of the most important feedings. For strengthening turf over the winter, use a fertilizer with less nitrogen than a spring fertilizer, but higher potash levels. The nitrogen stays put under the snow cover, ready for a quick start in the spring.

Open Question: Watermelon garden, need help?

Ok, doing my 2nd watermelon garden this year (a little late, I know) and I need some tips. Here is some info I think you will need: In Central Texas Already sandy ground (underneath the grass) 3 decently long Rows (I think should suffice) Using Sugar Baby Seeds After tilling up the grass yesterday, I noticed that there is a lot of tilled up grass scattered throughout the garden. What is the easiest way to get it all out? I was kinda hoping there was something I could throw on the back of my lawn mower but if I need to use an old fashioned rake I will lol. I also need some tips on some cheap products to use on the garden. I know ants and grass (growing back) was a big problem last year. Fertilizer or not? How often do you water when Texas is relatively dry during the summer? Would appreciate all the help, thanks!

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?

Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got tired of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it hard? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might enjoy learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Open Question: Can I plant my garden near Holly Bushes?

I want to plant a few vegetable rows in our flower bed next to our house. We live on a military base and our housing office has planted a few holly bushes in the same flower bed. We cant remove them without replacing them later. I was going to try and plant a few things around them but they will still be close. Will it hurt the vegetable plants to have them so close to the holly? Ive got a good 3-4' x 10' space for a small garden. And I cant plant anything in the backyard because our dog will destroy everything very fast lol and anything outside of the flower bed gets completely destroyed by the lawn care company. I thought about doing a container garden but I dont think housing will allow it, theyre looking the other way to let me plant vegetables in their precious flower beds so that we can save money and grow our own stuff. Im not sure how they will feel about container gardening out front. The other side of our house is shaded majority of the day since we have a 2 story but the holly bush side is full sun until 4 or 5 in the evening. Im going to cut back the Holly and the knockouts to let more sun get to the vegetables. Im going to do strawberries in baskets from our front porch and thinking of doing tomatoes this way also.

Open Question: Getting rid of iron stains on a drive?

I used some garden sand on my drive when it was icy. It includes iron containing chemicals to feed my lawn. It's left brown stains (probably Fe2O3) on my drive. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains? Would hydrochloric acid do it or would it dissolve my drive?
